Cases of Hysteria in Korean Soldiers

Abstract
The authors had experienced ten cases of hysteria who had been admitted in a Korean military general hospital. Among them five case were described.
It revealed that typical hysteric symptoms occurred more frequently in the military setting of harsh, authoritative and restrictive than the civil circumstances. And it was remarkable that a great portion of the cases were low-ranked soldiers who had Just started their, military service.
Considering our clinical experiences and the traditional ground of Korean culture stressing on the value of one¢¥s own dignity and self-esteem, we tentatively supposed, that there might be more cases of hysteria in Korean military hospital than any other countries.
Finally we suggest that the prompt and appropriate psychiatric intervention is crucial not only to the avoidance of unnecessary diagnostic procedures but also to the earlier recovery of hysteric symptoms and one¢¥s premorbid functioning.
